Paul & Al - Weekday Mornings on 94 HJY!
About Paul: Al and I were brought together by failure. I was a program director for an ill-fated radio station in Memphis while Al's partner failed to conquer a drug habit so I was out of a job and Al was out a partner. We worked together for less than a year in Mobile, Alabama before being hired by HJY to take the place of Caroline Fox. We found out she was damned popular; "You guys suck! When's Carolyn coming back?" was a phone call we heard more than once in our first few weeks on the air. Crazy to think that we've been on HJY for 20 years: as the cliche goes, time flies when you're having fun! We've been lucky and blessed to be surrounded by incredibly talented, creative and funny people. Who's better than Jim Shorts on Sports? And, speaking of multi-tasking, we have the hardest working and most creative man in radio as our producer, writer, video guru and web shaman, Kevin Mulhearn (and he's a Lowly Stuntboy too)! We're thankful to have had so many great support people; from interns to promotion people to management at HJY (too many to name, you know who you are)!
I was born in Indiana and am a 13th generation American (that must mean I have Indian blood on my hands!). I'm not sure where I got this streak of sarcasm and irony, my parents couldn't have been more loving, Christian and supportive. I started in radio in 1975 when I was 19 on a cool, hippy rock station in Mobile, Alabama. I worked and went to Spring Hill College where I met my amazing soul-mate, Barbara. We've been together 30 years (and I've been with Al for 21 years altogether: what's up with these long-term relationships?). I was accepted to University of Alabama law school but figured the world didn't need another lawyer (but it needed another obnoxious DJ???). Barbara had plans for medical school but we had other things on our minds - hmmmm - we had three beautiful kids early on! Thank the Good Lord, Barbara's genes dominated. Chris is a Marine JAG and proud new father (meaning, yes, I am GrandPaul!) Deirdre is finishing her PhD at Duke University in immunology and Steve is working with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in New Orleans this year. As you can tell I'm a dorky family guy who, through shear luck, is surrounded by talented people at work and a 'whole lotta love' at home!
