Even though they shared a room when they were younger, brothers Johnny and Tyler Gwynn were brought together by a shared love of music. As Johnny was picking up the guitar, Tyler was starting to bang on tables and chairs when he wasn’t on the old drum set in the basement.
Tyler and Johnny pushed each other to bring out their best music. Each brought something different to the table: Johnny's love of catchy songs and British music mixed with Tyler’s love of electronic, jazz, rock, funk, and anything that had a great beat to it. Over numerous jam sessions, they would each try new song ideas then work to flesh them out together; not necessarily for a band.
As songs took form, Johnny and Tyler decided to try them out wherever they could: playing VFW Halls, small clubs, bars -- anywhere people would listen. Before long, they realized that the sound they were striving for was bigger than two people. The brothers decided to add more members, Brendan Sullivan on bass and Tim Wadman on guitar, to complete the line-up of their new band, Rula Bula.
Rula Bula is an Irish phrase that means “Ruckus” or “Raucous Good Time” and the band strives to live up to the name. Playing rock music with emphasis on the groove, the band will have you jumping up and down one minute while looking for a dance partner the next. Rula Bula has played in one form or another from Arizona to Massachusetts to Manchester, England and everywhere in between. Their songs turn heads wherever they are performed!
After years of demos and single-song releases, Rula Bula is now finishing up their first album. Recording in small studios in New Bedford, MA and Falmouth, MA, the band is making sure they capture that raucous sound that has been a staple of their live shows!
