All this media blather, speculating on who won or who lost in this latest government debacle, bringing this nation close insolvency, threatening to pitch it into the dark abyss of economic catastrophe and financial ruin, ignores those who were truly in jeopardy of losing everything.
The American people.
With millions in investments, IRA's, and 401K's on the line, and tens of thousands of jobs at stake, the prospect of plunging this nation into a deep depression, de-valuing the dollar, and risking downgrades in America's credit rating, pompous fools in Washington refused to come together for the good of the country, turning their backs on those who elected them, worrying more about their political status and privilege than the health and welfare of the nation.
Perhaps the most egregious act of all was the reluctance of the American president to get off his high horse and invite open dialogue with those who opposed his policies. One of the obligations of the President is to use his position in office to influence, encourage, debate, and even charm those who's unreasonable demands and obstinate posturing endanger our reputation as the world's most dynamic economy, leading not only the Chinese, who hold most of our debt, but the rest of the world to view us a nation lacking leadership and coherence at a time when it was most urgently needed.
The Democrats didn't win, the Republicans didn't win, and the arrogance of Barack Obama further encouraged the divisive politics of a government in disarray. At a time when he could have brought both sides together with congeniality and reason, the President refused to do so. As the American people anxiously awaited a sensible resolution to this drama, Washington undermined the democratic process, causing a government shutdown that cost the nation 24 billion dollars in lost revenue while imperiling the survival of private sector small businesses that provide not only government services, but rely upon the revenue from those services to remain solvent.
Soon, just a few months from now, the American people will once again face the agony of uncertainty and incompetence from an insufferable Congress and a President focused more on his own self esteem and position than he is serving the needs of the people who elected him.
