YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHING YET
Every airport has one. They're mounted above people’s heads so everyone can see and hear. They're televisions. Usually tuned to a news source like CNN.
Yesterday, at one of the world's busiest airports , every person waiting for a flight out had their heads tilted back so they could hear and read the latest breaking news regarding the adventures of Obama, John Boehner, Biden, and the nail biting predicament that all of them got us into.
Let's take a head count. First, there's the President. He goes on the air on a Friday or Saturday, whatever it was, and pretty much disses the people he's supposed to working with to prevent the nation and the markets from meltdown. Second, take a look at what those markets did AFTER an agreement was reached. Every one of them soared. The Dow Jones went up 260 points. Your portfolio is looking good.
This is important because if they HADN"T avoided a catastrophe the markets would have gone south, down hundreds of points.
If you want to see firsthand how dysfunctional this government is consider this. After Boehner signed off on the agreement Eric Cantor, the House majority leader, stabbed him in the back, by refusing to accept the deal everyone else had signed off on. With just hours to go, the front end of the red white and blue American tractor trailer was about to take a nosedive into a recession. In other words, Eric Cantor was going to personally take charge of running the fragile American economy into the ground.
It’s unconscionable.
We elect them, pay their salaries, and in turn, they toss us around like a cat does a toy. They don't represent us. They're in it for themselves. That’s why America is nearly breathless with rage at the conduct of these so-called representatives of the people.
The sorry part of this whole saga is that we saw firsthand how the political class chooses to ignore the people at a time when leadership is needed most. Don't think that you can just vote this debacle out of office because right behind it is another one ready to take its place. We have a distinctive group of people who make their living off of our money and our votes and deliver nothing in return. They even have the gaul to threaten Social Security, something that we pay into and expect to help us pay for our expenses when our run is over. It isn't a lot, but it's something.
The most heartless gesture was the proposal to end unemployment benefits for the millions of people who need those benefits to survive. Can you imagine that? What did they expect those people to do without any money?
There are thousands of government programs that could be cut that don't directly hit the people. Like fighter planes that are obsolete the day they're finished being built. Handing out millions of dollars in government grants to fund projects like researching the purpose of trees or the sex life of mayflies.
I don't expect the political class to ever go away anytime soon. They're a permanent part of the American experience. All we can hope for is that they come together to deal with the nation’s problems instead of ripping them to shreds for their own selfish glory. And if you think this smirking, pompous bunch is done screwing around just wait. The debt ceiling is coming up. If we don't raise it, we won't be able to borrow any money. Then you'll really see a cage match. If you think the fiscal cliff was rough, you can't even begin to imagine the turbulence the debt ceiling issue will bring to Washington. I can't wait.
