Report: Traffic Down On Washington Bridge

Traffic has decreased on the Washington Bridge by nearly one-third, since the closure of the westbound span last December.

Figures from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation show less than 65-thousand vehicles used the bridge on Monday, down 33 percent from the daily average of about 96-thousand at the time of the closure.

During the past three weeks, westbound bridge traffic is about 52-thousand vehicles per day, down by nearly half.

RIDOT spokesperson Charles St. Martin says motorists have adapted and are using alternate routes.

He noted more westbound traffic is taking the Henderson and Newport Pell Bridges instead.
